On January 15, a delegation from Ellettsville traveled to the Indiana Statehouse to advocate for House Bill 1080, a proposed legislative change that could significantly impact local revenue. Town Council Member William Ellis, Town Clerk Noelle Conyer, and Ellettsville Chamber of Commerce Director Jill Thurman represented the town.

House Bill 1080, coauthored by State Representatives Peggy Mayfield and Bob Heaton, aims to ensure that the Food and Beverage Tax collected within the Town of Ellettsville is returned directly to the town. Currently, revenue from the Monroe County Food and Beverage Tax is distributed between the City of Bloomington and Monroe County, with Ellettsville receiving no direct allocation. Advocates for the bill argue that this change would provide much-needed financial resources for local projects, infrastructure improvements, and public transportation.

During their visit, William, Noelle, and Jill had the opportunity to testify in support of the bill, sharing insights on how the proposed change could benefit Ellettsville. They emphasized the importance of keeping tax revenue within the community, allowing for more significant investment in the town’s growth and development.

In addition to their testimony, the group met with key state officials, including Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales and State Treasurer Daniel Elliott. These meetings provided an opportunity to discuss broader legislative issues affecting Ellettsville and to strengthen relationships with state leaders who play a vital role in shaping policies that impact local communities.

The Ellettsville Chamber of Commerce continues to actively support legislative efforts that promote economic growth and sustainability for the town. Residents and business owners are encouraged to stay informed and engaged as House Bill 1080 moves through the legislative process.
