Duke Energy to help stock the pantry with enhanced food selection, local organizations to offer a wide range of resources and services

Pantry 279 in Monroe County will hold a “Duke Energy Cares” community resource event on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3609 State Road 46 in Bloomington. During the event, families and individuals in need will be able to access an enhanced selection of basic food staples from the pantry as well as resources and information about various programs and services available locally.

“We appreciate Duke Energy’s partnership as we continue our mission to support those in need within our community,” said Cindy Chavez, director of Pantry 279. “We invite local residents to come out to this event, connect directly with service providers and learn more about the valuable resources that are available.”

Several community organizations will be on-site to offer a wide range of resources, services and information:

  • Hoosier Hills Food Bank will offer information about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), including eligibility and the application process.
  • The South Central Community Action Program will offer information about its weatherization, child care and energy assistance programs.
  • IU Health Positive Link will provide health screenings for HIV and hepatitis as well as information on assistance programs.
  • Alternative Care Solutions will offer information on home care services and daily living assistance for seniors.
  • My Sister’s Closet of Monroe County will provide information about resume assistance and professional workforce clothing for women seeking sustainable employment.
  • Indiana Health Center will provide blood pressure and glucose testing to monitor heart health.
  • The Excel Center will provide information about free public school for adults to earn an Indiana Core 40 high school diploma.

The event is made possible through an $8,000 contribution from Duke Energy. The company will have representatives on-site to offer information on electric bill management programs, energy assistance funds and energy efficiency programs.

“This event is a great opportunity for anyone who needs assistance – or simply wants to learn more about local services – to engage with organizations that are here to help,” said Liz Irwin, Duke Energy government and community relations manager. “We’re glad to support the vital role Pantry 279 plays in this community.”
