The Ellettsville community came together on May 26, 2025, for a solemn and moving Memorial Day Program, held at Memorial Park and presented by the Ellettsville Parks & Recreation Board, Ellettsville Main Street Inc., and the Ellettsville Chamber of Commerce.
The Ceremony began at 11:00 a.m. with opening remarks from Parks Board President and Ellettsville Chief of Police Jimmie Durnil, followed by the Star-Spangled Banner performed on bugle by Dr. Ken Guzik.
Chaplain Randolph McCollum of the Ellettsville Police Department led the opening prayer, setting a reverent tone for the morning. The Ellettsville Fire Department then conducted the Colors Ceremony with dignity and precision, accompanied by “To the Colors,” performed by Dr. Guzik.
The program featured a beautiful wreath-laying ceremony by the Girl Scouts, followed by special musical performances, including “Hero” by Chrislyn Miller and “Traveling Soldier” by Chrislyn Miller, Dreyden Snyder, and Meg Wilson.
A powerful U.S. Service Branch Medley was played as veterans from each branch of the military stood to be recognized.
Allyssa Nasir introduced the Honored Featured Veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Lloyd K. DeWar, whose service was recognized with heartfelt appreciation.
Jimmie D. Durnil, U.S. Navy Veteran, introduced the keynote speaker, Yeoman 1st Class Petty Officer Misty Jacobs of the U.S. Coast Guard. Her remarks reflected courage, service, and sacrifice, serving as a poignant reminder of the true meaning of Memorial Day.
The program concluded with Taps performed by Dr. Guzik and a closing benediction from Chaplain McCollum.
We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this meaningful event and to all who joined us in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
